RESUMO

The purpose of the current study was to compare quality of life health outcomes during the year prior to and first year of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic among people who lived in a nursing home. This study used quarterly cross-sectional data from Minimum Data Sets between March 2019 and March 2021 among 96 people who resided in a nursing home. Health outcomes were cognitive function, transfer ability, depression, rejecting care, falls, urinary tract infections, physical conflict, and verbal conflict. Data were analyzed using Stuart-Maxwell test to compare differences in health outcomes in the year prior to and first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. There were statistically significant differences between the two time periods for the worsening of health outcomes related to transfer ability, rejecting care, physical conflict, and verbal conflict. Understanding the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on health outcomes among people who live in nursing homes is critical for improving individual health and health system preparedness. RESUMO

Cancer survivors have unique life challenges that threaten their well-being. Concept building has identified fearless tenacity as a process that is critical to meaningful survival, by expanding understanding of how cancer survivors get along day by day as they transcend the course of cancer treatment and move beyond to pursue life purpose. This work establishes a foundation for nurses wishing to promote self-worth through fostering fearless tenacity. It sets a direction for research and practice grounded in the discipline through a specific nursing theory and solid footing from both extant literature and the real life experiences.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Student groups compare evidence-based practice (EBP) to actual practice defined by hospital policies in their clinical rotation sites. This article describes a pilot study evaluating this clinical learning activity. METHOD: Student and faculty surveys were developed and piloted. Purposive sampling with the surveys produced qualitative data and basic statistics to evaluate the learning activity. RESULTS: This study suggests that students' satisfaction with the clinical learning activity was generally positive. Three themes emerged, including Relevance to Clinical Practice, Course Outcomes Met, and Reinforcement of Evidence-Based Practice. Faculty surveys showed this learning activity was a useful tool for students to learn and utilize EBP. CONCLUSION: The learning activity is an effective learning and teaching strategy. Collaboration among nursing students, faculty, librarian, and nurses enhanced students' understanding of evidence related to policies in nursing practice and create a meaningful experience. Further work will focus on validation of the surveys. [J Nurs Educ. 2018;57(1):44-48.].

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of parent-child interaction on self-esteem as mediated by emotional support and self-perception among undergraduate nursing students in Thailand. This study recruited 307 Thai baccalaureate nursing students who completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Ross Parent-Child Interaction Questionnaire, Emotional Support instrument, and Self-Perception questionnaire. Results revealed that the students reported relatively high self-esteem. A path model demonstrated the positive effect of parent-child interaction on emotional support and self-perception, and the positive effects of emotional support and self-perception on self-esteem. Self esteem was powerfully predicted from emotional support and moderately predicted from self-perception. These variables account for 37% of the variance in self esteem.

RESUMO

Nursing students are valuable human resources. Detection of potential depression among nursing students is crucial since depression can lead to low productivity, minimized quality of life, and suicidal ideas. Identifying factors affecting depression among students can help nursing educators to find ways to decrease depression. The purpose of this study was to examine rates of depression and the associations between depression and stress, emotional support, and self-esteem among baccalaureate nursing students in Thailand. This correlational, cross-sectional study recruited 331 baccalaureate Thai nursing students. Students completed three instruments that had been translated into Thai: The Center for Epidemiology Studies Depression Scale, Perceived Stress Questionnaire, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Another instrument created in Thai was used to measure emotional support. Results revealed that, when using the standard definition, 50.1% of the students were depressed. Stress was positively related to depression, whereas emotional support and self-esteem were negatively related to depression.
